Through experimentation, there is currently a range of variables available for how the software is programmed to lose words. These prototypes have been developed to intervene in different forms of personal writing and each process holds different visual significances and cognitive outcomes for the user. A brief description of these separate interactions is as follows:

- Time based Interactions - Seconds

  • WORDS FALLING

This involves watching and reading the words gradually falling from the text, resulting in a cathartic reading experience. Previous users have described the experience of the program like watching a ship sinking or ripping something up.
  • User Features: The mouse can be used to start and pause the interaction. Further development could include the ability to control the speed of the falling words, which would alter the reading experience.
  • Words Disappearing/Reappearing

This involves watching and reading as the words of the text fades away, using chance to reveal new insights.
  • User Features: The mouse can be pressed to result in the words reappearing in the same or different order, playfully altering reminiscence around the described events of the text.

- NEGATIVE WORDS BASED INTERACTIONS - SENTIMENT

  • MousePressed

This one was fascinating. There are different ways for thinking and for looking at it. - (user comment). The software is programmed to remove oppressive words of negative sentiment, either through the process of falling away or fading. This leaves behind empty, blank spaces, which hold the potential for thinking about the events in a more positive way.
  • User Features: The mouse can be used to access or control the interaction, which has been proved to add a sense of dramatic tension.

- Time based Interactions - Minutes

  • Word Class Saved

Removing excess and giving you one thing to start again - (user comment). The software is programmed to remove one word per minute from the text, expanding the time from milliseconds to minutes. This program is intended for creative writing purposes.
  • User Features: Unlike fading or falling, the user has the ability to choose the words that will be saved, based on their word class, such as nouns, verbs and adjectives. Screenshots of the text are saved every minute, in order to record this process of degradation.

Are you a writer who is curious about trying out the software? If so, I would be very excited to hear from you:
